Downton's Christmas Day extravaganza made good use of the photogenic Inveraray castle as the backdrop for the Grantham's jaunt to the West Highlands. Given speculation that Downton has jumped the shark, writer Julian Fellowes could have done worse than look at Inverary's real-life characters for inspiration. The current 13th Duke of Argyll has a colourful family; the 11th Duke was a notorious gambler who married four heiresses, the third of which wasn't spared any blushes during their 1963 divorce. Margaret Whigham, the presiding judge concluded, was "a completely promiscuous woman whose sexual appetite could only be satisfies by a number of men". That should help sort ratings out, surely?
