Dramatic rescue stories in the Westcountry featuring RNLI lifeguards and volunteer crews are to be promoted through a new social media campaign.

The charity's #SaveWave campaign has now been launched, with the public are able to share stories through sites such as Twitter and Facebook using the hashtag.

RNLI lifeguards and lifeboat crews have been inundated with emergency calls this summer, with an uplift in rescues in line with bouts of good weather.

RNLI lifeguard manager Simon Crayfourd said by the end of the campaign the charity hopes to have shared its rescue stories with more than a million people.

He said: "This campaign is not about donating money – signing up to #SaveWave is completely free. It's all about sharing our stories with as many people as possible."

To sign up to the campaign visit savewave.rnli.org and register through a Facebook or Twitter account, sharing two selected RNLI stories with your followers.

Dave Turnbull, RNLI mechanic at Swanage lifeboat station, added: "We want members of the public to hear about the rescue stories that are taking place all the time by our lifeboat crews and lifeguards. We want to create a wave of exposure that will lead to more donations." Reported by This is 15 hours ago.
